Welcome to The George

Orton

The George Hotel is at the heart of our beautiful village which has been our home for around 3 years. We decided to run the village pub in February 2024, when it became at risk of closure.

Orton is an amazing & beautiful village, once a hidden gem it has benefitted more recently from becoming part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. More tranquil than the Lake District National Park which lies to the west. Orton is surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, peaceful country lanes and the nearby Orton fells. Walkers, cyclists, bird watchers and wildflower enthusiasts appreciate its natural charm.

Orton is also an ideal base for those wishing to explore the Lake District National Park to the west and the rest of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the east. The Lune valley is nearby and the Upper Eden valley is only a few miles away.

Orton itself has a lot to offer, The Wainwright ‘Coast to Coast’ walk passes through the village and is a popular staging post before the long haul to Kirby Stephen. Other walks from the village lead over Orton Scar a place of deep fissures that support ferns and wildflowers. Beyond the Scar lies Castle Folds, a small fort and wall constructed to hold cattle during Scottish raids.

One mile east of Orton is the ancient Gamelands Stone Circle some 100 yards in circumference.  Although one of the largest in Cumbria, all of its stones have tumbled, and none are higher than one yard. Above the village is Great Asby Scar which is an open, exposed area of land with stunning areas of limestone pavement. Also nearby is Sunbiggin Tarn – an unusual small lake important for birds and other animals that thrive there.

Good sturdy boots are required in order to visit these places, however if you choose to explore our village you will find becks that cross the common land in our village centre, the award-winning Kennedy’s Chocolate Shop & Orton Scar Café all which are a must for visitors. The local Village Store & Post Office offers basic provisions, locally made produce, fresh sandwiches and picnic supplies.

We hope you enjoy your stay in Orton at The George, if there is anything we can do for you to ensure you stay in enjoyable, please do not hesitate to ask.
